While there have been numerous debates about the issue since, one consistent concern has been the way that the comparison is used to try to invalidate the authenticity of transgender people, which is why those who make the comparison between transgender and transracial are often seen as transphobic.

Last week, Crews recounted his experience to the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, which would guarantee certain rights for people who report being assaulted. “I heard time and time again about the rights that my predator had, but I was never told about the rights I had as a survivor,” Crews said in his testimony.

Crews also recounted how he has suffered for coming forward, claiming he dropped out of the cast of The Expendables because the producer allegedly pressured him to drop his case against the talent agent. The discussion over Crews’ tweet proves that it’s possible to critique someone while supporting them in their struggle. It’s now up to Crews to take in the feedback from trans voices and prove with his actions that he’s heard them.
