After a passionate fan campaign to save it, Netflix’s abruptly canceled sapphic show Warrior Nun is set to return as a trilogy of films, but things won’t look the same behind the scenes.
Last week, a mysterious countdown appeared on the website Warrior Nun Saved. Although the announcement turned out to be unrelated to the upcoming films, many fans theorized that big news was coming about the story’s future. In response to questions about new reveals, series showrunner Simon Barry took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share some surprising news about his own lack of involvement in the Warrior Nun films.

“Hey #WarriorNun family, thanks for all your comments/messages/questions etc. FYI - I have no idea what’s being announced tomorrow,” Barry wrote. “I am not part of the team producing the movies, and have no deal in place for any writing or directing services. I am 👀 with you.”
Based on the comic book Warrior Nun Areala, the show stars Alba Bapitsta as Ava, a queer orphan with superpowers who falls for Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) while training to fight on behalf of a sect of demon-hunting nuns. When the show was canceled just a month after season two premiered, joining the long line of queer women-led series that have been axed in the past year alone, fans launched a dedicated effort to save it. In June, Barry himself confirmed that the show would return. Naturally, fans are eager for information about what’s next, especially given that Alba and Beatrice’s story ended on a romantic cliffhanger. The news that key creatives from the series aren’t returning was a shock.
“Well this sucks. If the original creator and other members of the creative team aren’t on board then what’s next, a whole new cast?” one person commented. “#SaveWarriorNun was about saving the show we had, not about resurrecting the show as an idea and rebooting it, which is what I now fear is happening.”
